We are still almost entirely reliant on hydrocarbon and high energy processes for the chemicals and products required for a modern society. There is growing interest in a less intensive ‘biorefinery’ approach to generate the chemical products that we require, such as biodegradable plastics that can be recycled end-of-life. In this way production and waste management is much more sustainable, leading eventually to a circular carbon economy.
