National Oceanography Centre

About us

The National Oceanography Centre is a world-leading centre for research and education in  marine and earth sciences. NOC plays a major role in influencing scientific, environmental, and maritime policy in both the UK and Europe by engaging private enterprise, government, non-governmental bodies, and the public in the process and outcomes of science in the search for solutions to maximise societal and economic benefits. NOC comprises science research groups in the areas of Marine Systems Modelling (MSM), Marine Physics and Ocean Climate, Marine Geoscience, Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems, and Ocean Technology and Engineering. The engagement with the Oxford DTP is through the MSM group (contact Prof. Adrian New), and we seek PhD students to work with us on the analysis of ocean (and biogeochemical) modelling datasets, primarily from high-resolution global ocean circulation models (configurations of the NEMO system) at horizontal resolutions of 1, 1/4, and 1/12 degree. Through a close partnership with the Met Office, we also work in the area of climate modelling and dynamics, and seek further engagement in this area.

The NOC is interested in a variety of types of engagement with the DTP and its students, including co-supervision arrangements, CASE studentships, access to data sets, access to models and work placements.
